Iowa Court of Appeals accepting judge applications

The Iowa Court of Appeals is looking to fill a recent vacancy and will accept applications until July 3, the State Judicial Nominating Commission announced. 

The State Judicial Nominating Commission will nominate five applicants and present them as candidates for consideration by Gov. Kim Reynolds.

Judge Anuradha Vaitheswaran’s retirement opened one of the nine spots on the Court of Appeals. Vaitheswaran went to high school in Cedar Rapids and attended Grinnell College for her undergraduate degree and the University of Iowa for her law degree and master’s in political science. She was appointed to the court in 1999.

The nominating commission will accept public comment on applicants until July 9, and a list of applicants along with their experience, background and qualifications will be made publicly available at after the application time has finished.

The commission responsible for the nomination process is comprised of 17 people. Eight of the members are elected by lawyers licensed to practice in Iowa, the remaining nine members are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Iowa Senate. 

The Court of Appeals reviews trial court decisions that have been transferred from the Supreme Court and determines whether any significant legal errors were made in rulings.
